Light therapy is the application of light rays to the skin for the treatment of wrinkles, capillaries, pigmentation, and/or inflammation. LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode and can come in many different colors: red, yellow, green, and blue. Today, we’ll be answering the most asked questions when it comes to LED light therapy.

WHAT DO THE DIFFERENT COLORS DO?

The most common colors used are red and blue. Red LED lights repair the effects of photodamage, enhance circulation and production of collagen and elastin, and reduce inflammation and redness. Red LED lights also speed up the healing process up to 50 percent. Blue LED is said to kill bacteria and is considered effective in treating acne. Green LED lights are commonly used for hyperpigmentation. Yellow LED lights help with sensitive skin and reduce edema.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

LED technology uses energy-producing packets of light that enhances fibroblast collagen synthesis. The process involves using low-level light energy to activate cellular metabolism. When absorbed by epidermal cells, LED light therapy triggers the production of cellular energy that is necessary for the synthesis RNA, DNA enzymes, and proteins.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes! LED wavelengths are used at low intensities and use visible light that’s considered in the skin’s safety zone. LEDs do not contain harmful ultraviolet rays. LED therapy is also used clinically for reduction of pain and enhanced wound healing with a variety of reported successes.

IS IT EFFECTIVE?

With any esthetic treatment, a series of treatments is recommended for best results. With four to eight repeated treatment sessions, LED can minimize fine lines and pores, reduce skin redness, and increase circulation. LED light therapy can improve the skin over time, and you’ll need maintenance treatments after your initial treatment. However, at-home LED devices use lower frequencies and aren’t proven to be as effective.  LED light therapy is a great treatment that can be safely done on any skin type and color.  From acne to aging, LEDs can help improve your skin.
