Medical Management of hair loss in St. George

DESERT BLOOM PLASTIC SURGERY

What medications can I take to slow or stop hair thinning?

Several FDA medications are used to help improve or stabilize hair loss and have wonderful research showing improvement while using them.

  1. Minoxidil: A common topical over-the-counter foam that stimulates hair growth a the follicle level. It can be used by both men and women.
  2. Finasteride: This oral medication is used by men to reduce the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair follicles for male-pattern hair loss are sensitive to DHT and will cause the hair follicle to thin or shed the hair over time.
  3. Other medications are not FDA approved for hair loss but are sometimes used off-label such as Dutasteride, spironolactone, and corticosteroids.

Low-level laser therapy has been shown to stimulate the scalp resulting in increased hair growth.  Many devices are available to use but our patients tell us Capillus is the most user friendly.
